Heavy Rains Cause Road Closures And Rising Water Levels In Mababe And Moremi

MAUN, BOTSWANA – Persistent rainfall across the region has led to significant disruptions in and around Mababe, including the temporary closure of the Mababe Bridge. The torrential downpours have rendered sections of the Mababe–Maun Road nearly impassable, with large pools of standing water creating hazardous driving conditions for both residents and visitors.

Local authorities and the Department of Wildlife are closely monitoring the situation. Early reports indicate that roads within the Moremi Game Reserve are also experiencing gradual flooding. Although the park remains open for the time being, officials are warning that if water levels continue to rise, sections of Moremi may be closed to ensure the safety of tourists and wildlife.

“The water is accumulating on the roads faster than usual, and we are taking proactive measures to assess any potential risks,” said an official from the Wildlife Department. “If conditions worsen, we will not hesitate to restrict access to certain areas of the reserve. Public safety is our highest priority.”

Residents are urged to exercise caution when traveling, especially along poorly maintained or waterlogged roadways. The local tourism sector has also been advised to prepare for possible itinerary changes, as various safari routes in and around the park may soon be limited or temporarily shut down to protect both people and the environment.

Authorities are encouraging travelers to stay informed by checking official announcements and local news updates. They also advise carrying emergency supplies such as extra water, food, and a first-aid kit if travel is absolutely necessary. For further information or to report any road hazards, contact local authorities, the Department of Roads, or the Department of Wildlife.
